Eternity Ring

Eternity rings are also called diamond infinity rings, diamond bands and "dress" wedding rings. Like wedding rings they are a symbol of commitment and everlasting love. These types' of rings are frequently given to celebrate an anniversary or other special event such as the birth of a child, but there is no specific occasion for which to give this meaningful gift.

Ring Designs

Eternity bands often appear to be a circle of gemstones, the continuous loop of stones being symbolic of eternal or everlasting love. Mostly set with diamonds, other stones like Rubies, Sapphires and Emeralds are also fashionable however, diamonds remain a popular choice.

Because of the simplicity of the eternity ring, there are fewer styles to choose from when compared to, for example, the engagement ring. Nevertheless there are settings, alloy, and ring designs that can be chose to reflect individual characteristics, preferences and budget. The two distinct deigns are the Full and Half Eternity.

Full versus Half Eternity

It can be difficult to choose between the Full and Half Eternity as both really depend on the rings they will be worn with and indeed personal preference. Points to note are:

Full Eternity Ring
Half Eternity Ring
Diamond Full Eternity Ring

Have a complete circle of gems around the band.

Only have stones visible on the ‘top' of the ring.

Traditional Diamond Half Eternity Ring
Emerald & Diamond Full Eternity Ring

Have stones around the entire finger, therefore for comfort, only smaller gems can be used.

Can use slightly larger stones.

Modern Diamond Half Eternity Ring
Ruby & Diamond Full Eternity Ring

The vast majority of full eternity rings must be individually sized as they cannot be resized after manufacture because of the stone settings.

Can be sized later, but a large increase or decrease in size can effect the ring shape.

Sapphire & Diamond Half Eternity Ring
Sapphire & Diamond Full Eternity Ring

A benefit of full bands is that as the ring rotates on the finger, the stones are always displayed.

Many women prefer to have the stones concentrated on the ‘top' of the ring so they are visible.

Stone Shape and Setting

Whether choosing Full or Half Eternity Rings, the design is such that the stones are nestled close together and thus must be a small and compact shape. The most popular shapes include the round, princess and emerald cuts. Rings do not usually mix stone shapes or sizes in order to preserve the continuity of the design, although alternating patterns can be found.

As for settings, the prong (or claw), channel and pave settings are very popular. The channel set is easy to manufacture and a style that many find appealing. The clean lines of the design ensure stones don't snag on clothing and fit snugly against other rings without causing damage.

Wearing an Eternity Ring

Eternity rings are usually worn on the same finger as the wedding ring. Many women choose to replace their wedding band with an eternity ring and wear it along with their engagement ring. If the rings are slender and do not look out of proportion with the finger, it is perfectly acceptable to wear an eternity band in addition to the engagement ring and wedding band. When worn this way it is really personal preference as to the order the rings are worn.

While the style, stones, and placement of eternity rings are important to consider, the sentiment conveyed by an eternity ring is the most important part of the gift and that is a celebration of a life together as unending as a circle.
